The Summit will address wide range of issues which have a paramount importance for the regional security, including strengthening of cooperation between member states in fight against terrorism and extremism, enhancement of coordination between implementing bodies of the organization and member countries, including joint military and peacekeeping forces, better joint response for emergency situations in the region.

Special focus will be given to the situation in the Middle East and rising threats at the southern borders of the CSTO in the light of activization of terrorist and extremist groups. In this context the sides will examine the results of last joint military trainings held recently in Tajikistan and Russia.

It is expected that a number of joint documents will be signed during the Summit and leader’s joint communique on vital issues of international and regional security agenda will be adopted.

Meanwhile, the day before the Summit, the CSTO leaders arrived to Dushanbe. Kazakhstan President Mr.Nursultan Nazarbaev paid his official visit before the Summit starts to discuss issues related to the development of friendly relations and expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation with Tajikistan. Presidents of two countries expressed their satisfaction with the possibility of enhancement of bilateral relations to the level of strategic partnership.

The President of Tajikistan Mr. Emomali Rahmon at the beginning of bilateral talk with his Kazakh counterpart stressed: “We attach immense importance to your visit to Tajikistan. I am convinced that this visit, its content and scope is able to open a new page in relations of Tajikistan and Kazakhstan”. In turn Nazarbaev said that “Over the years of independence there have never been no and there will be no problems in the relations between Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. We wish peace and accord to Tajikistan, which is our strategic partner, because peace in Tajikistan is important for us as well and we are ready to support development of Tajikistan’s economy”.

In result of negotiations between the delegations six new documents were signed aiming further development of bilateral ties in economy, information, education, culture and sports. The Treaty on Strategic Partnership between Kazakhstan and Tajikistan and the Program of cooperation between Foreign Ministries of two countries were amongst signed documents.

This year Tajikistan holds the presidency in the CSTO. During the year the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan paid great efforts for effective organization of a number significant trainings of collective military forces of the CSTO.

In May, contingents of six member countries tested their combat readiness in southern part of the country. Over 2,500 military personnel, about 200 units of military hardware, 20 fighter jets as well as three military transport aircraft were involved in the trainings. In addition, in August, rapid reaction forces of the CSTO countries practiced joint operations to fight smuggling of narcotic drugs and to curb the activities of criminal groups in the territory of CSTO member states.

Charge d’affaires of Tajikistan Embassy in London Mr.Asliddin Rakhmatov speaking on the theme stressed:

“The Republic of Tajikistan gives a great importance to the participation in the CSTO activities. Cooperation within the framework of the Organization is in the national interests of Tajikistan and allows active countering to international terrorism, religious extremism, drug and arms trafficking and in general providing security and stability in the region of Central Asia.”

He further said: “Tomorrow’s Summit in Dushanbe is a good platform to make important and necessary decisions for further maintenance of the joint capacity to foster peace and stability in our countries. Tajikistan stands for CSTO becoming the significant factor in ensuring security and keen to actively develop effective cooperation with its member states”.

After the summit, Armenia will take over the one-year presidency in the CSTO.
