Tajikistan official delegation headed by the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan H. E. Emomali Rahmon visited New York to attend the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.

On 19 September 2017 on initiative of the Republic of Tajikistan the High-level event under the title “Towards implementation of the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028” was organized within the framework of the UN General Assembly.

As the “International Decade for Action ‘Water for Sustainable Development’, 2018-2028” commences on World Water Day 22 March 2018, the High-level event gave an opportunity, first and foremost, to raise awareness about the timely and effective implementation of the SDG6 and other water-related SDGs and to discuss the activities of the Decade at the global, regional and country levels.

High-rank representatives of the Member States, relevant UN bodies, specialized agencies, regional commissions, as well as other relevant partners, including private sector attended the event and discussed the process of implementation of the Decade especially issues on monitoring, financing, capacity development, access to technology and partnership with private sector and civil society.

President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon took part in the event and has informed the international community in detail about the results of implementation of the first Water Decade - International Decade for Action “Water for Life”, 2005-2015. It was noted that all efforts within the framework of the United Nations and other international organizationsduring the last twenty years have made significant contribution in maintenance of access to safe drinking water, enhancing knowledge and skills in the field of water resource management,  creating new opportunities to tackle global challenges related to water resources.

On the same day, President Emomali Rahmon addressed the general debate of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly. In his address Emomali Rahmon spoke about the position of Tajikistan Government regarding the UN reform, fight against terrorism and extremism, solution of the North Korea crisis through a peaceful settlement, establishing peace and stability in Afghanistan, fight against drug trafficking and successful implementation of the Agenda for Sustainable Development2030.

President Emomali Rahmon has confirmed that Tajikistan will continue to actively participate in the implementation of the UN Water Agenda. The President has also informed the international community that Tajikistan supports and actively participates in organization of International Forum on   "International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development ", 2018-2028" to be held on World Water Day – 22nd of March 2018 in New York and will host the High-level International Water Conference in June, 2018 in Dushanbe.
